ReplyDeleteNew to this forum and soon to join the Mauser M03 club. I live in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada and soon expecting delivery of my Mauser M03 Solid with a grade 5 walnut stock. I have ordered it with two barrels - one in 30-06 Sprg. and the second in 6.5x55SE. I have a set of the Mauser M03 30mm Low Mount Rings coming as well to mount a Schmidt & Bender - Exos 1-8x24 BDC FD9 rifle scope. FIrst of all, I have searched the web to find the best way to install the scope on the mounts along with torque setting for the ring screw and ring cap screws. Haven't had any luck with my search, but I found this awesome Mauser M03 Blog and forum (Great job Rick!) and hoping someone is able to help or guide me in the right direction. Much appreciated!

Hi Mark. Congratulations on your new Mauser M03! I can imagine how excited you are about meeting your new Grade 5 walnut stock, just as I was with the Grade 5 that came with my M03 Deluxe. I'm wondering if you had the opportunity to nominate a preference for the wood, or even make a selection from a shortlist of finalists? A bit like a beauty competition. :-) Either way, it'll be very nice wood.
ReplyDeleteI will be able to provide advice on the scope mounting process, having learnt a few things when I was doing mine. A quick question first - do you have a nice torque screwdriver, one that can be fitted with Torx bits? Something like this would be ideal. I should get one too.

I'll check on the two Torx bit sizes needed and get back soon. Hang on, I'll go and grab a scope and my driver set. Right, I've got the Zeiss 1.5-6x42 Victory HT on the desk now, with a M03 Double Square Mount installed on it. Yep, there are two sizes of screws. The rings are fitted around the 30mm scope tube with eight screws with Torx size 10 heads. Then, the base of the rings are fitted to the Double Square Mount's bridge piece with two screws with Torx size 20 heads. So those are the two bit sizes needed. I used a small in/lb torque wrench, but a screwdriver would have been better. Or better still, just do it by feel with a small hand tool. It's too easy to go too tight with a torque wrench, if it doesn't release properly at the low settings you'll be working at. The good thing about doing small screws up with just your fingers is that they have a pretty reliable biological torque wrench built in. :-) You can just tell when it's tight enough.
I'll write a new post to the blog today with some tips on fitting scope mounts. I've been meaning to do this for ages.

I recently purchased a second hand M03 Extreme in .458 Lott. This rifle came with a scope mount, which I am reserving for the additional .300 Win Mag barrel that I have purchased. I then purchased a Picatinny mount, for the M03, from Optics Trade but I cannot get this mount to fit on the action. I thought that all M03 mounts would be interchangeable but this mount seems to be to be fitted. Is that how they should be or do I have a dud mount? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Robert. Congratulations on joining the fraternity of intelligent, wise and good looking folk who own and use Mauser M03 rifles. Re the Picatinny mount, the first question that pops into my mind is, is it actually an original Mauser scope mount? There are some third party versions that have been made, some very good. Can I ask you to please describe the way in which it doesn't fit? Thanks.
